The Becherhaus, located at 3,191 meters, is the highest inned hut in the Stubaital valley – and one of the highest huts in all of Tyrol. The hut lies directly on the main ridge, at the border between Tyrol and South Tyrol, and is an indispensable base camp for climbers venturing out to explore the high-altitude terrain of the Stubai Main Ridge.
Location and Atmosphere
At 3,191 meters above sea level, vegetation has long since disappeared – the Becherhaus stands in the midst of an archaic world of rock, ice, and sky. Glacier tongues reach as far as nearby the hut, and the surrounding peaks rise above the 3,400-meter mark. The view stretches as far as the Dolomites and far beyond the Alps.
The Becherhaus is a DAV hut with a long history – a place where alpinism is still alive and well. The atmosphere is concentrated and respectful of nature. This is no destination for day trippers; only people with experience and the right equipment venture out to tackle the high mountains.
Offer and Kitchen
The hut offers what alpinists need at this altitude: hearty soups, warm main courses, and half-board for overnight guests. The short season means that operations have been simplified; however, this does not make the Becherhaus any less hospitable – the hut wardens receive every guest who has braved the long ascent with genuine warmth.
Approach / Ascent
The ascent to the Becherhaus is by foot only and requires mountaineering experience and basic knowledge of high alpine terrain. Starting points are located in the rear Stubaital valley. The ascent takes 4 to 6 hours and covers glacier terrain. Crampons and ice axe are required, depending on snow conditions.
The Becherhaus is also accessible as a single-stage leg on multi-day routes connecting the Stubai and Ötztal Main Ridges.
Combination Possibilities
- Zuckerhütl (3,507 m): highest peak of the Stubaier Alps, accessible from the hut with glacier gear
- Crossings into South Tyrol: the Becherhaus lies directly on the main ridge – descend into South Tyrol for multi-day tours
- Müllerhütte and Hildesheimer Hütte: connecting stages in the high-alpine Stubai network
- Stubai High Route: connecting link into the Weitwandernetz of the region
Tips
- Only for Experienced: this hut is not a destination for inexperienced hikers – high-altitude experience is a prerequisite
- Early Start: at this altitude: reach the summit by midday, afternoons are prone to thunderstorms
- Equipment: bring complete high-altitude climbing gear
- Book in advance: accommodation capacity is limited
The Becherhaus is a destination for those seeking the purest form of high mountains. Whoever makes it here has accomplished something – and will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the Eastern Alps.
