Dortmunder Hütte

The Dortmunder Hütte is located at 2,948 m in the Kühtai – and is thus one of the highest accessible huts in Tyrol. Those looking for high-altitude terrain that significantly differs from that of the Stubaital are in the right place.

Location and Character

The Kühtai is a high plateau west of Innsbruck at an altitude of about 2,000 m – one of the few areas in the Alps where you can already be at Alpine level in the valley. The Dortmunder Hütte lies another 1,000 m higher at the foot of the Pirchkogel (3,082 m).

High-altitude atmosphere, little traffic, genuine alpinist clientele. Not the right spot for casual hikers.

Access

From Kühtai (end of the road, about 2,000 m): Ascent via the normal route, about 2.5 hours, 950 meters altitude gain. The path is well-marked, but steep and partly unmarked.

From Innsbruck to Kühtai: About 45 minutes via Kematen and the Kühtaier street (toll road from Kematen, about 6 €).

Combination with Stubaital

A day at Dortmunder Hütte is a deliberate contrast to the Stubaital: here – glaciers and throngs, there – high-altitude solitude. A good option for the second or third day of a Stubaital stay, if you want to see something different.
