Franz Senn Hut

The Franz Senn Hut at 2,147 m is one of the most important bases in the Stubaier Hochgebirge – named after the mountaineer- priest Franz Senn (1831–1884), one of the founders of the German Alpine Club. The hut is located in Oberbergtal, the most impressive side valley of the Stubaital, and is the starting point for high-altitude tours to summits over 3,000 m. Those who hike to the Franz Senn Hut enter a different terrain: glaciers, rock ridges, high-altitude landscape.

Location and Atmosphere

Oberbergtal is one of the most beautiful high-altitude valleys in Tyrol – a long valley surrounded by three-thousanders, leading from the valley floor to the Stubaier main ridge. The Franz Senn Hut is located at the end of the climbed section, on an alpine meadow with views of the Fernauferner and Ruderhofspitze (3,473 m).

The hut is a real Alpine operation: no gondola comfort, no panoramic tourist – the public comes on foot and has plans for the next day. The atmosphere is corresponding: concentrated, friendly, focused on the essential.

Cuisine

Full Alpine cuisine: warm meals in the afternoon and evening, half-board including evening meal and breakfast for overnight guests. The portions are generous – after a long ascent one needs that. Vegetarian options available.

Tip: The breakfast at the Franz Senn Hut is legendary among alpinists. Getting up early is worth it not only for the weather.

Accommodation

130 sleeping places in mattress rooms and multi-bed rooms – one of the larger huts in the Stubaital. Advance booking under +43 5226 2218 is absolutely necessary, especially in July and August. The hut is the starting point for the Stubaier Höhenweg and is correspondingly popular.

Arrival / Ascent

Oberbergtal Car Park (Upper Berghof Inn, ca. 1,380 m): From here begins the hike to the Franz Senn Hut. The path leads up through Oberbergtal – ca. 4 hours, 760 metres of ascent. Well-marked, but long: condition and mountain hiking boots are a must.

Tip: The path through Oberbergtal is also worthwhile without a summit ambition – the landscape alone justifies the ascent.

Combination Possibilities

• Ruderhofspitze (3,473 m): Classic high-altitude tour from the hut – only for experienced alpinists with glacier contact.
• Stubaier Höhenweg: The Franz Senn Hut is one of the main stations of the multi-day Stubaier Höhenweg.
• Karalm: On the way into Oberbergtal one passes the Karalm – ideal for a first rest.

Tips

• Book early: Often fully booked in high summer. Book at least 2 weeks in advance.
• Departure time: For summit tours you must depart by 6:00 at the latest – thunderstorms come early in the Stubaital.
• Crampons and rope: Required for tours above the hut (from around 2,700 m).
• Dogs: Not allowed on the hut – the high-alpine environment is not dog-friendly.

The Franz Senn Hut is not a day-trip destination – it is a base camp. Those who come here have plans. And after the night on the hut, with the first light over the Fernauferner, one understands why this hut has been a fixed point in the Stubaital for almost 150 years.
