The Grawa Alm lies at 1,640m in the Stubaital, directly next to the Grawa Waterfall – one of the broadest and most impressive waterfalls in Austria. Whoever walks to the Grawa Alm gets two experiences in one: the thundering, 80m-wide tiered waterfall and then the peace of an alpine meadow with a view of the Stubaier mountain peaks. This is a combination that can hardly be found anywhere else.
Location and Atmosphere
The Grawa Alm is located in the upper Stubaital, near Ranalt, at one of the main access points to the Stubaier Glacier region. The waterfall is the attraction point – in early summer, when the snowmelt causes the Grawa Brook to swell, it’s spectacular. The alpine meadow behind it is the calm counterpart: alpine pastures, wooden tables, cows, and a view of the high peaks.
The audience is mixed: families with small children, hikers on their way to the high-altitude huts, day visitors from the glacier. The Grawa Alm is accessible due to its location on the main trail – but not overcrowded.
Cuisine
Simple, honest alpine fare: platters, soups, cakes, drinks. No surprises on the menu, but good quality and reasonable prices. The Grawa Alm is not a gourmet restaurant – it’s the perfect stop after the waterfall.
Tip: The Grawa Alm’s apple strudel has a local reputation.
Approach / Hike
From Ranalt Car Park (approx. 1,400m): From the car park at the end of the upper Stubaital main road, a well-marked path leads to the Grawa Waterfall and the Grawa Alm – approximately 45 minutes, 240 meters altitude gain. The path is suitable for families with older children; strollers are only possible on the lower section.
By Car: Ranalt is accessible via the Stubaital main road, car park available (pay-and-display).
Combination options
- Grawa Waterfall: Right on the trail – definitely worth stopping and taking a look.
- Sulzenau Hut (2,191m): For fit hikers: From the Grawa Alm, continue uphill, approximately 2.5 hours.
- Mutterberg Alm: From Ranalt, continue to the Mutterberg Alm, starting point for the Stubaier Glacierbahn.
- Stubai Valley Circular Route: The Grawa Alm as a stage of a longer valley hike.
Tips
- Waterfall Timing: In June and July, the waterfall is at its most impressive (snowmelt).
- Dogs: Welcome, leash on the alp and at livestock.
- Buggies: Possible up to the waterfall; to the alp a bit stony.
- Early Start: Park at Ranalt car park early to avoid congestion.
The Grawa Alm is the simplest access to genuine alpine scenery in the upper Stubaital – with the most spectacular waterfall in Tyrol as a starter.
