The Starkenburger Hütte at 2.236 m lies on the Hohe Burgstall, a broad mountain ridge west of Neustift in the Stubaital, and offers one of the most comprehensive views of the entire Stubaital: from the valley floor at Schönberg to the Stubaier Glacier, with the Serles as the eastern counterpart. The hut is owned by the DAV-Section Starkenburg and since 1887 a fixed point in Stubaital alpinism.

Location and Atmosphere

The Hohe Burgstall is not a spectacular individual peak, but an extraordinary vantage point – whoever stands on the hut terrain sees the Stubaital in its full length. In the west the Nockspitze (Saile, 2.404 m), in the south the glacier mountains of the Stubaier Hauptkamm, in the east the Serles. The Starkenburger Hütte is not the shortest route to the best view – but one of the most rewarding.

The hut itself is a classic Alpine operation: cozy, well-run, with a mix of day tourists and high alpinists. The shared evenings on the hut evening belong to the experience.

Cuisine

Solid hut food: soups, warm main dishes, snack, Kaiserschmarrn. The Starkenburger Hütte places value on regional ingredients – bacon, cheese and milk come from the Stubaital. For guests staying overnight, half board is offered; the portions are geared towards people who have climbed for 3 hours beforehand.

Accommodation

60 sleeping places in matrass-lager and multi-bed rooms – medium-sized DAV-hut with a pleasant ratio between comfort and hut character. Prior registration under +43 5226 3419 recommended, especially in July and August.

Access / Ascent

From Neustift: Marked path from the town center Neustift, approx. 3 hours ascent, 900 meters height difference. The path leads through forest terrain and then over open alpine meadows. Technically unproblematic, but conditionally demanding.

Alternative ascent: Via the Elfer-Gondola to the Elfer-Hütte, then summit hike towards Starkenburger Hütte – approx. 3,5 hours from Gondola, but with distinctly less height difference.

Combination Possibilities

  • Nockspitze / Saile (2.404 m): Popular peak, approx. 1,5 hours from Starkenburger Hütte – for trek-sure walkers.
  • Elferhütte: Possible to hike the Elfer-Hütte – total length around 5 hours, more demanding mountain ridge path.
  • Round tour Stubaital West: Starkenburger Hütte as part of a multi-day round – continuation possible towards Schlickeralm.

Tips

  • Early start: The ascent is largely in the sun – on hot summer days start early.
  • Dogs: allowed up to the hut and on the terrace. In the hut itself with prior arrangement.
  • Reservation: book at least 1-2 weeks in advance in the high season.
  • Best travel time: mid-September – calm, cool, larches begin to glow.

The Starkenburger Hütte is one of the classically most impressive huts in the Stubaital – guests who stay overnight experience the peace of the high mountains without compromise. The sunset over the Stubaier Glacier from the hut terrain is an experience you won’t forget.
