Sulzenau Hut

The Sulzenau Hut on 2.191 m is located under the Sulzenauferner, one of the most impressive glaciers of the Stubai Valley, and offers one of the most direct views of active glacier ice in Tyrol. Those watching the glacier from the terrace and listening to the stream flowing out of the ice will understand the Stubai Valley as a living alpine landscape – not as a postcard motif.

Location and Atmosphere

The Sulzenau Hut is located in the southern part of the Stubai Valley, near the Stubaier Gletscherbahnen – but on a different route, away from mass glacier tourism. The climb leads through the Stubaier Grawa area and then steeply up to the hut, which sits in a hollow under the glacier. The hut is an alpine business: The clientele comes for the glacier and summit tours in the area, not for a relaxing lunch break.

The atmosphere is intense and alpine. Bad weather can quickly set in – the hut is exposed.

Cuisine

Full-scale hut cuisine: Hot meals for day guests in the afternoon, half-board for overnight guests in the evening. Soups, noodles, meat dishes – the portions are generous. No gourmet establishment, but exactly what you need after climbing.

Accommodation

80 Bed Places in Mattress Lagers and Multi-Bed Chambers. The hut is the starting point for high-alpine tours – many guests set out early in the morning. Advance booking under +43 5226 8183 is strictly necessary.

Approach / Ascent

From Park Mutterbergalm (ca. 1.750 m, end of Stubai Valley Road): From here begins the ascent to the Sulzenau Hut – ca. 3 hours, just under 450 meters of altitude. The path leads through the Grawa Gorge with the famous Grawa Waterfall and then steeply up to the hut.

Note: From Mutterbergalm, the Glacierbahn is also accessible – the Sulzenau Hut is on a different route, not via Glacierbahn.

Combination Possibilities

• Zuckerhuetl (3.507 m): Highest Peak of the Stubaier Main Ridge – only with glacier equipment and guide.
• Wilder Pfaff / Wilder Freiger: Classical Peaks of the Stubaier High-Mountain Region, from the hut.
• Grawa Waterfall: On the way to the hut – can be a goal for accompanying persons who do not climb to the hut.

Tips

• Equipment: Crampons, ice axe, and alpine experience are necessary for tours from the Sulzenau Hut.
• Weather Check: The glacier area can have bad conditions even with good valley weather.
• Early Start: Glacier tours only in the morning – firn becomes soft, rockfall danger increases in the afternoon.
• Dogs: Not allowed on the glacier terrain and in the hut.
