Franz-Senn-Hütte – History and Hike to the Oberbergtal

The Franz-Senn-Hütte (2.149 m) is more than just a hut. It’s a piece of Alpine history, the starting point for the most challenging tours in the Stubaier Alpen, and at the same time one of the most beautiful hiking destinations in the Stubaital, which can also be reached by less experienced hikers.

Who was Franz Senn?

Franz Senn (1831–1884) was a curate in Vent (Ötztal) and is considered one of the founders of organized Alpine mountaineering in Tyrol. He was a co-founder of the German Alpine Association (1869) and has made numerous first ascents in the Ötztaler and Stubaier Alpen. The hut named after him is one of the oldest of the DAV-Hüttensystem in the Stubaier Alpen.

The Hike to the Franz-Senn-Hütte

Starting Point: Oberissalm car park (ca. 1,742 m), Neustift Height Difference: about 405 Hm Hiking Time: 1.5 hours up, 1.5 hours down Difficulty: Medium – well-passable path, no climbing

Route Description:

  1. Oberissalm car park → refreshments available right at the starting point
  2. Oberissalm → Franz-Senn-Hütte (approx. 1.5 hours) – steadily climbing, open alpine slopes

From the Oberissalm car park, the valley opens up. The view of the Stubaier Hauptkamm – Schrankogel, Ruderhofspitze, Rinnensee area – becomes increasingly impressive.

What makes the Franz-Senn-Hütte special

  • Location: Directly at the foot of the main ridge, surrounded by three-thousanders
  • Bewirtschaftung: Fully managed (ÖAV Section Innsbruck), meals, luggage, and rooms
  • Overnight Stay: Ideal for multi-day tours – many hikers use it as a base for high-altitude tours
  • Environment: Original, not overcrowded, genuine hut operation

From the Franz-Senn-Hütte onward

Those using the hut as a starting point reach:

  • Rinnensee (ca. 2,648 m) – lake below the Stubaier Hauptkamm
  • Neue Regensburger Hütte (2,286 m) – crossing over the ridge to the Pinnis valley
  • Main Ridge Crossings – for experienced mountaineers with high-altitude tour experience

Season and Opening Hours

The Franz-Senn-Hütte is open from mid-June to late September. Prior reservations are recommended in summer – the hut is popular.

A day trip to Franz-Senn-Hütte and back is rewarding. Spending a night there is even more so.
