Grawa Waterfall – the widest waterfall in Austria in the Stubaital Valley

The Grawa Waterfall in the upper Stubaital Valley is one of the most impressive natural attractions in Tyrol – and at the same time one of the most accessible. No climbing, no acrophobia necessary, no sunset missed: the waterfall lies directly on the walking trail through the valley.

Why the Grawa Waterfall is unique

With a width of over 80 meters, the Grawa Waterfall is the widest waterfall in Austria. It cascades in several waterfalls from the rock walls of the Sulzenauer Kamml into the valley – particularly impressive after the snow melt in early summer, but also impressive in high summer.

The water comes from the Sulzenauferner, one of the Stubai glaciers. The more ice melts, the more water. An impressive natural spectacle with climate relevance.

The tour to the waterfall

Start: Grawa Alm car park (approx. 1,650 m), Stubaital towards Mutterberg Destination: Grawa Waterfall (approx. 1,700 m) Length: approx. 2-3 km depending on the starting point Elevation difference: minimal Difficulty: easy – suitable for all

From the Grawa Alm, the waterfall is approximately 20-30 minutes on foot. The path is wide and well-marked.

Those arriving from Neustift take the bus to the Grawa or Mutterberg stops and walk back.

Grawa Alm – a break at the waterfall

The Grawa Alm lies directly on the route and is an ideal rest point:

  • Traditional Tyrolean cuisine, snacks, coffee, and cake
  • Large terrace with views towards the glacier
  • Dog-friendly
  • Open from spring to autumn

Best travel time

Early summer (June): Waterfall at its peak – snow melt brings maximum water volume. Green and fresh.

High summer (July-August): Still impressive, alpine pastures open, weather more stable.

Autumn (October): Less water, but vibrant larches – the Stubaital in October is an experience in itself.

Combination tips

  • Sulzenau Hut: From the Grawa Alm continue upwards to the Sulzenau Hut (2,196 m) – one of the most beautiful huts in the Stubai Valley, right at the glacier.
  • Mutterberg Alm: At the end of the valley, with views of the Stubai Glacier and starting point for the glacier cable car.

The Grawa Waterfall is not a hike – it’s a day trip destination. And yet one of the most beautiful points in the Stubaital Valley.
