There’s a moment in October when the Stubaital valley shines in a light that can’t be captured in photographs – you have to be there. The larches turn from green to yellow to orange, the air is crystal clear, the huts are still open, and the trails are all yours.
October is the best time to hike in the Stubaital valley. Locals know it – and surprisingly, few tourists do.
Why Autumn is Special
In summer, the Stubaital valley is busy. In October, it’s not. The gondolas still operate, some huts are open until the end of October, the trails are dry – and the larch magic makes every hike a different experience.
What Autumn Brings:
- Larches glow golden yellow (usually mid-to-late October)
- Cooler temperatures – ideal hiking conditions
- Fewer tourists, free parking spots, quiet huts
- Clear long-distance views (Föhn periods are particularly beautiful)
- No risk of afternoon thunderstorms (rare but less likely)
The Most Beautiful Autumn Hikes in the Stubaital Valley
Karalm Loop in the Oberbergtal
In October, the Oberbergtal shines: larches, autumn meadows in golden hues, views of the three-thousand-meter peaks. The Karalm is one of the last alpine pastures to extend its season. Ideal autumn hike – quiet, colorful, rewarding.
Grawa Waterfall
In October, the waterfall flows less water – but the larches along the way compensate more than that. The valley trail to the Grawa Alm is a larch path.
Pinnistal Circular Hike
In October, the Pinnistal is particularly quiet. The Pinnisalm usually closes in mid-October – after that, the valley belongs to those who know.
Elferhütte – Last Ascent of the Season
The Elfer gondola operates until the end of October. From the top, you see the entire Stubaital valley in its autumn attire – one of the most impressive panoramas in Tyrol in October.
Important Notes for October Hikes
- Check hut opening hours: Not all huts are still open in October. Always inquire in advance.
- Daylight hours: October means fewer daylight hours. Important to plan ahead, start early.
- Snow: Above 2,000 meters, it can snow in October. High-altitude hikes only with the right equipment.
- Gondolas: Operating hours in October are often reduced – check the schedules.
Insider Tip: Mid-October
The larch magic isn’t every day. It lasts around 2-3 weeks – and the timing varies depending on elevation and weather. Mid-October is statistically the best time. With a bit of luck and a Föhn wind, the light is perfect then.
The Stubaital in October is a different Stubaital. Quieter, more colorful, and more authentic.
