Stubaital with Children – Family Hikes for Every Age Group

The Stubaital is an excellent family hiking area – with ropeways shortening the ascent, broad paths, many alpine guest farms, and the right tour for every age. Here are the best routes for families with children.

Under 6 years – Ropeway and Short Paths

With children under 6 years old, the Serlesbahn Ropeway to the Elferhütte is the best start. Arrived at the top, there’s an alpine meadow, a terrace with a panorama, and short paths without elevation gain. Enough for an unforgettable mountain day without exhaustion.

Alternative: The Grawa Falls – a flat valley path, hardly any incline, and at the end a broad waterfall. Strollers possible up to shortly before the waterfall.

6–10 years – First Real Hikes

At this age, children are ready for the first real tour. Recommendation:

Karalm Loop (7 km, 350 Hm)

The ideal children’s tour: manageable length, broad paths, stopover at the Karalm with snacks. The Oberbergtal is quiet – no traffic, little traffic. Children who have never hiked before can complete this loop without problems.

Pinnisalm Circular Hike (9 km, 400 Hm)

Through the quiet side valley of Neustift, stopover at the Pinnisalm. The path is broad and well-marked. Suitable for children from 7–8 years old.

10–14 years – More Challenging Tours

Older children can experience their first hut ascents:

Schlitteralm Tour (Schlick 2000 Ropeway + Hike)

Ropeway to the Schlitteralm (1,616 m), from there short hike to the viewing point. Suitable for children from 8–10 years old, if the ropeway does the main job.

Elferhütte on Foot

Who has children with endurance and mountain experience: the ascent to the Elferhütte (1,100 Hm) is a real achievement. A great success experience for sporty children from 10–12 years old.

Tips for Families in the Stubaital

  • Early Start: By 1 PM, thunderstorms quickly build up in the Stubaital. Complete the tour or reach a hut by 1 PM at the latest.
  • Packed Snack: Hut stays make breaks more enjoyable – but a small reserve in the backpack is a must.
  • Weather: Often perfect in the morning, changing by midday. Always carry rain gear.
  • Early Sunday: At the weekend, ropeways and parking areas are crowded early. Especially worth an early start.

The Stubaital offers everything for families: short and long tours, ropeways as a safety net, alps for refueling, and mountain panoramas that will also captivate children.
