Elferhütte Hike

The Elferhütte at 2,080 m is one of the most well-known hiking destinations in Stubaital – and the ascent on foot is the genuine way, to get there. 900 metres of ascent from Neustift town center, through woods, over alpine meadows, until the ridge and the first large panorama becomes visible: the entire Stubaital from Schönberg to the glacier. Those who hike up instead of taking the gondola, do not only arrive at the hut – they earn the panorama.

Why this hike?

The ascent to Elferhütte is the perfect medium-level hike for all, who want more than one gondola ride in Stubaital: physically demanding, technically uncomplicated, with a clear reward at the end. The combination of a managed hut (with Tyrolean cuisine and sun terrace) and the best viewpoint in northern Stubaital makes this hike a reference point.

Those who take the gondola up and hike down – also a good option and spares one direction.

Route description

Start Neustift town center (ca. 1,000 m): From Neustift town center, a marked hiking trail leads to Elfer Ridge. The first 30 minutes lead through the village and into forest terrain.

Forest ascent (ca. 1.5 hours): The trail ascends consistently through dense forest – a shaded section, ideal for hot summertime. No technically challenging terrain, but constantly uphill.

Alpine terrain (ca. 45 min.): In the upper section, the forest opens up to alpine meadows – the first extensive views into the valley. The terrain becomes slightly steeper.

Elferhütte (2,080 m): Arrival after approximately 3 hours. The sun terrace with panorama view is the well-deserved reward. Austrian-style cuisine, Tyrolean delicacies, terrance.

Descent: Same trail back (ca. 2.5 hours) or gondola (Elfer Gondola, ride ca. 12 minutes).

Requirements

• Medium fitness: 900 Hm is demanding
• Hiking boots recommended (no technically challenging terrain, but long path)
• Bring water for ascent (no source on the trail)

Tips for the hike

• Early departure: Enjoy the forest ascent in the cool morning air during hot summertime.
• Gondola combination: Ascend and take the gondola down – a classic combination – cheaper and saves knee strain.
• Elfer summit: Further ascent from the hut to Elfer summit (2,504 m), approximately 1.5 hours – only for sure-footed hikers.
• Dogs: Possible on ascent, not allowed on the hut (even outside).

The Elferhütten hike is the definitive Stubaital experience for all who want to hike and not only ride the gondolas.
