The Grawa Waterfall is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Austria – 80 meters wide, 100 meters high, a broad fan of white water over dark rock. The hike there from Ranalt is short, easy and suitable for all age groups. At the end awaits the Grawa Alm with snacks and a panoramic view. This is the ideal introduction to the Stubaital for everyone with no mountaineering experience – and also for everyone who just wants to spend a nice afternoon.
Why this tour?
The Grawa Waterfall is no secret tip, but it deserves its popularity: The combination of an impressive natural phenomenon, a short hike and a possibility to take a break makes it the most popular outing in the upper Stubaital. Families with children, seniors, dogs – everyone gets their money’s worth here.
The waterfall is especially spectacular in June and July, when the snowmelt swells the Grawa Brook. In August it becomes quieter, but no less beautiful.
Hiking description
Start Parkplatz Ranalt (ca. 1,400 m): The car park is located at the end of the publicly accessible Stubaital road. From here it goes downhill on a well-marked hiking trail.
To the waterfall (ca. 30 Min.): The path leads flat through the valley floor, until the waterfall can be heard, long before it can be seen. The viewing platform directly at the foot of the waterfall is the highlight: close enough to feel the spray.
To the Grawa Alm (ca. 20 Min.): From the waterfall, the path leads a short section steep uphill to the Grawa Alm on 1,640 m – the viewing platform after the highlight.
Return (ca. 40 Min.): Same path back or easy variant over the other valley slope.
Places to take a break
The Grawa Alm (1,640 m) is located directly on the path and is the only but very good possibility to take a break: snacks, soups, cakes, the homemade apple strudel is famous.
