Walking time
The hike to Sulzenau Hut at 2,191 m is one of the most spectacular hut tours in the Stubaital. The path leads from the Mutterbergalm car park through the wild and romantic Grawagraben gorge, past the thundering Grawa Waterfall, and then steeply up the mountain to the hut – with a direct view of the Sulzenau Glacier, one of the few active glaciers that can still be reached on foot in Tyrol.
Why this tour?
Reaching glaciers on foot has become rare in the Alpine region. Sulzenau Hut offers this experience: The Sulzenau Glacier is visible, audible (melting water, stones), and within reach, without glacier equipment or a guide. The hut itself lies on a rocky outcrop directly in front of the glacier ice – that’s a panorama that no cable car can buy.
Additional bonus: The Grawa Waterfall is located directly on the path. The outward and return paths therefore offer two of the most impressive natural spectacles in the Stubaital.
Route description
Start Mutterbergalm car park (approx. 1,750 m): At the end of the Stubaital road (glacier side). From here, the path leads downwards into the gorge through the Grawagraben valley.
Grawa Waterfall (approx. 30 Min.): The path leads directly past the waterfall – a breathtaking sight, especially in early summer.
Grawagraben ascent (approx. 1.5 hours): Steeply up the mountain through the narrow gorge. The path is well secured, but exposed – recommendable for those with a head for heights.
Sulzenau Hut (2,191 m, approx. 4 hours total): Arrival on the high plateau with glacier view. The terrace with a view of the Sulzenau Glacier is the highlight.
Descent: Same path back, approx. 3 hours.
