Wilder Freiger – Seven Summits Stubai

Wilder Freiger (3,418 m) is one of the highest peaks of the Seven Summits Stubai – and, by far, the most technically demanding. The tour leads over the Sulzenau Hütte to glacier terrain: crampons, glacier rope, and alpine experience are no option, but a strict requirement.

Why Conquer the Wilder Freiger?

Who ascends the Wilder Freiger enters a different world. From the Sulzenau Hütte (2,191 m) begins the glacier terrain – firn, crevasses, bare ice. Above, at the 3,418-m-summit, lies the view free over the entire Central Alps panorama: Ötztal Alps, Zillertal Alps, the main ridge of the Stubai Alps.

That is no hiking summit. That is true alpinism.

Route Description

Mutterberg (ca. 1,750 m): From the Gletscherparkhaus downhill to Sulzenaufall.

Sulzenau Alm (ca. 1,860 m): First rest point, beautiful alpine meadow before the actual ascent.

Sulzenau Hütte (2,191 m): Catered DAV hut – here gear up, inspect the weather. Overnight possibility for a two-day variant.

Glacier Entrance (from ca. 2,400 m): From here crampons and rope team mandatory. The glacier today is smaller than before – possible route variation depending on season.

Freiger Ridge / Summit (3,418 m): The last meters over the ridge are exposed. Gipfelblick in all directions.

Requirements

• Essential glacier experience
• Crampons, pick, rope, and harness necessary
• Multi-day high-altitude experience recommended
• Steep exposure requires absolute acrophobia
• No dogs – glacier not suited, animal welfare

Tips

• Overnight Sulzenau Hütte: The classic route is a two-day affair – Day 1 ascend to the hut, Day 2 summit
• Best Time: July – August – Glacier suitable in early summer
• Guided Tour: For those without glacier experience, hire a certified guide from the Stubai Valley
• Current Conditions: Check with local hut staff about up-to-date glacier and route conditions
