Padasterjochhaus

The Padasterjochhaus at 2,232m is situated at the Padasterjoch, a historic mountain pass connecting the Stubaital and Gschnitztal valleys. The pass has been a popular route between the valleys since the Middle Ages – the current mountain shelter adheres to this tradition and offers hikers a place to rest and refuel as they cross the pass.

Location and Atmosphere

The Padasterjoch lies on a broad saddle between two valleys – characteristic for these pass routes is the open, expansive landscape. Facing west, the Stubaital valley stretches out; facing east, the Gschnitztal valley comes into view. The vegetation on this height is already subalpine in character: larch trees, dwarf shrubs, and alpine grasses dominate the landscape.

The Padasterjochhaus is a simple mountain shelter without any ambitions to become a major tourist destination. Hikers arriving here are usually on a journey from one valley to the other or embarked on an attractive circuit through the alpine terrain.

Cuisine and Offering

The kitchen provides the basic program: warm soups, sandwiches, snacks, and refreshments. For longer stays, there are simple warm meals available. The house also offers simple overnight accommodations for hikers crossing the pass, who may choose to break their route into multiple days.

Approach / Ascent

The ascent from the Stubaital valley leads from Telfes or Fulpmes via marked hiking trails to the pass. Ascent time: approximately 2 to 3 hours. Alternatively, the Padasterjoch can be reached from the Gschnitztal side, which is particularly interesting for circular tours.

The path is not technically challenging but demands good physical condition and sturdy hiking boots.

The Padasterjochhaus is not a major tourist destination but an authentic stopping point for hikers exploring the Stubaital. The view from the pass belongs to the least known, yet most beautiful, in the entire area.
